HMS 'Victory' wooden block
Rough block of pine with a pressed-brass label attached. 'FROM THE BOWSPRIT OF H.M.S. VICTORY NELSON'S FLAGSHIP TRAFALGAR 1805. PURCHASED 2ND JUNE 1937'. In August 2019 the Museum received an enquiry about a short, turned wooden candlestick found by the enquirer's brother on waste-land at Plymouth in the late 1960s, bearing the same pressed metal label. It is presumed that a bowsprit taken off 'Victory' as part of restoration work in the 1930s (probably a late rather than early one) was converted into these souvenirs for sale at the (then) Victory Museum, Portsmouth, or elsewhere, in support of the ship's ongoing maintenance.
