Chinese visiting card

Chinese visiting card, coloured red. Visiting cards of two Chinese figures with their names written on two pieces of Chinese red paper. This one belonged to Ye Zugui ( 'Capt. Yip Choo Kwee'). Associated with the two visiting cards is a piece of European red paper with watermark which might be useful for dating, and a red envelope marked with 'Southwood, 90 Regent Street W.' A note attached to the collected items indicates that the visiting cards were left at the Penang Club in 1894.
Both Ding Ruchang (1836-1895) and Ye Zugui (1852-1905) were important members of the Qing’s Empire’s Beiyang Fleet and had traveled to England on different occasions.

Penang Club was established in Penang State (i.e., Malaysia) in 1868 which was 'an exclusive expatriates’ enclave” for Europeans. Admiral Ding did visit Penang, Malacca and other islands in Southeast Asia prior to the First Sino-Japanese War. This was probably how his and Ye’s visiting cards were left at the club. After the visit, Ding suggested to the government that Chinese consulates should be established in these places to protect the rights of Chinese merchants. [May Bo Ching].
