Greenwich Pensioner John Rome [Roome], Seaman

A photographic carte de visite head and shoulders portrait of John Rome, as a Greenwich Pensioner. The image is of man in a dark jacket and white shirt looking at the camera, head slightly bowed.

ZBA7506 is another (lighter) version of this carte de visite. An accompanying letter from Mrs C. Davis, dated October 1904, says: 'This is a photo of Old Pensioner Roon - Lord Nelson's Signal Man - who hoisted "England Expects &c', at the time it was taken in 1858. Roon was then over 80 years of age (a patient of my husband's in Greenwich Hospital). / The photo was taken by the late Dr. Alexander Fisher RN, who was there at the time. Dr. A. Fisher died 20 years ago and I have reason to believe this may be the only copy. / C. Davis'

This photograph was given by Inspector General F. W. Davis, RN to the Royal United Services Museum where it was allocated the number 173. The catalogue entry stated: 'Photograph of Pensioner Roome, who hoisted Lord Nelson's famous signal at the Battle of Trafalgar "England expects etc..." The photograph was taken in 1858, when Roome was over 80 years of age.'
