City of Perth (1949); Merchant vessel; Passenger/cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A shipbuilder's model of the City of Perth (1949), a general cargo ship. The hull is painted black with a broad pink stripe at the waterline, dark purple/black below the waterline, and there are white bulwarks. There are a pair of anchors at the bow and companionways have been rigged on the port and starboard broadsides. There are portholes in the midships and stern quarters glazed with surface-silvered glass. The service and cargo decks are painted brown and the passenger decks are varnished wood. The forecastle has a union flag flying from a jackstaff at the bow, anchor cable winches, a single ventilator, and a bell mounted on a tripod stand. The forward cargo deck has three covered hatches of varying sizes. Set between the first and second hatches is a derrick mast and between the second and third hatches are a pair of derricks. The winches that operate the derricks are plated a gunmetal finish. The main superstructure is placed forward of amidships and is painted white. The front elevation is slightly convex and has two companionways on the port and starboard sides. The bridge has two open areas flanking it and, on the upper deck, an open pilot house includes a ship's wheel and binnacle. This area has an awning frame. The rear elevation of this superstructure includes a public room, open to the deck, and is protected by a white and green canvas awning secured to the facade of the superstructure. The room shows furniture, fittings, and the general layout. Further aft there are four lifeboats, with white hulls and covers, stowed on davits in two rows on the port and starboard sides. Between the boats there is a single funnel painted salmon pink with a black sloping top and a broad yellow ochre stripe separated by two narrow white stripes above and below. The aft cargo deck has two cargo hatches, the foremost one being the larger of the two, with a derrick mast between them and a pair of derricks forward of them. The derrick mast is flying a red flag with 'S.S.' in yellow, and a blue triangular pennant with 'J.R.E.' also in yellow. The deckhouse at the stern is painted white and has numerous portholes and doors. Awning frames are rigged around and atop. On the roof of the deckhouse there is a secondary bridge with a wheel, binnacle, and telegraph. On port and starboard bows, and stern: 'City of Perth'. On plaques: 'S.S. Dims 450-0" B.P. x 61-6" breadth MLD x 33-3" MLD' and 'Model made by shipbuilders'.
