HMS Lightning (1877); Warship; First class torpedo boat
Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull builder's model of HMS 'Lightning' (1876), a torpedo boat. Model is decked and fully equipped including a single14-inch torpedo tube mounted over the bow and two single torpedoes mounted on their launching cradles amidships.
Built and designed by John I. Thornycroft of Chiswick, London, it measured 85 feet in length by 11 feet in the beam and had a displacement of 27 tons. It was powered by a single compound steam engine capable of a speed of 19 knots. ‘Lightning’ was the first torpedo boat to be built for the Royal Navy and was subsequently known as ‘Torpedo Boat No. 1’. It was the world’s first warship to be equipped to launch a locomotive torpedo. After being used for trials, it was later used as a tender to the torpedo school at HMS ‘Vernon’, Portsmouth, before eventually being broken up in 1905.
