Torpedo Boat (1882); Warship; Second class

Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of a second-class torpedo boat mounted on its original brass crutches and wooden baseboard. The hull has been carved from a solid block of wood and fitted with a wooden deck veneer, with a ‘whaleback’ profile on the foredeck. It is complete with a number of fittings including deck hatches, ventilators, a single mast and a ‘Berthon’ collapsible lifeboat in two parts, located on the afterdeck.

These small torpedo boats were intended for harbour defence or to be carried aboard a larger mother ship such a battleship or a large cruiser. They were built between 1878 and 1889 at a number of shipyards such as Thornycroft Ltd., Chiswick, Yarrow at Poplar, and White Ltd. at Cowes, Isle of Wight. The two torpedoes were dropped from the broadside gear as shown the model, and aimed by steering the boat in the required direction. This particular design was from the Thornycroft yard and measured 63 feet in length by 7 and half feet in the beam.(
