Clan Ross
Scale: 1:96. The model depicts the fast general cargo ship ‘Clan Ross’ (1956), the second of two ships to be built by Greenock Dockyard for Clan Line Steamers Ltd. The company had services to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South and East Africa and this vessel was transferred from one company to another within the group to meet the requirements of their trade. Deep tanks were provided for the carriage of liquid cargo, such as palm oil, and 40- and 80-ton heavy lift derricks enabled large pieces of machinery to be carried either in the holds or on deck.
The ship was renamed several times: in 1961 it became the ‘South African Scientist’ and a year later it was renamed ‘Kinnard Castle’. In 1965 it was transferred to the Union Castle Line and, in 1979, became the very last of that company’s ships to carry mails on the Southampton – Ascension Island – Saint Helena – Cape Town – Port Elizabeth – East London – Durban – Southampton run. It was scrapped in 1984.
