Portuguese Caravel

Scale: 1:30. A full hull model of a Portuguese caravel (circa 1490), a four masted cargo and sailing vessel, built in 'bread and butter' fashion. Model is decked, equipped and fully rigged, with sails set. It depicts a vessel measuring 65 feet in length by 23 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 120 burden. Portuguese crosses are displayed on all of the sails together with flags and pennants flying from the top of the masts. This model illustrates the larger and later type of caravel having four masts, the foremast of which is fitted with square sails as well as having a bowsprit rigged over the bow rigged with the square spritsail.
