Ajax (1767); Warship; Third rate; 74 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the 'Ajax' (1767), a 74-gun two-decker ship of the line, built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. Model is partially decked and equipped and is mounted on its original baseboard. This model is slightly unusual in that it has been made so that it separates along the line of the gun deck, revealing the complex internal construction and layout. It is made from traditional English fruitwoods such as apple and pear with the planking and carved decoration executed in box.
The 'Ajax’ was built at the Royal Dockyard, Plymouth and measured 168 feet along the gun deck by 47 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 1613 burden. It is a very typical example of the standard two-decker with the long poop and forecastle and the comparatively short waist between the fore and main masts. The 'Ajax’ was one of the many seventy-fours built towards the latter half of the 18th century forming the backbone of the line-of-battle in all the major actions under sail. It took part in several actions under the command of Hood, Graves and Rodney, including the Battle of the Saints in 1782. It was finally sold for breaking up in 1785.
