Warship; Fourth rate; 50 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a 50-gun small two-decker (circa 1695) built plank on frame in the Navy Board style. Model is decked and fully rigged and mounted on a modern wooden base. The model clearly illustrates the profuse amount of carved decoration, typical for the late 17th century. At this scale the model represent a ship measuring 132 feet along the gun deck by 36 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 700 burden. It carried 32-pounder guns on the gun deck, 12-pounders on the upper deck and 6-pounders on the quarterdeck. On the stern the royal arms and single monogram ‘WR’, representing William III, provides a date of between 1695 and 1702 (the single monogram being an indication of the death of Mary, his queen, in December 1694).

The rigging is of particular interest as it illustrates the typical features of the late 17th century, notably the short mizzen mast with its lateen yard, the round fighting tops, a bowsprit unsupported by a bobstay, and the spritsail topmast and yard situated at the end of the bowsprit. The model was re-rigged in the museum in 1937 by A.H. Waite using contemporary evidence. A unique feature of this model is the large amount of walnut veneer just above the mainwales and either side of the gunports.
