Falkland (1720); Warship; Fourth rate; 50 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull block model of the Falkland (1720) a 50 gun two-decker third-rate ship of the line. The model is made of wood in the bread-and-butter fashion and painted white below the waterline, with the main and upper wales, bulwarks screens and flush decks all picked out in black. The planking along the side at the level of the gun decks is painted a yellow ochre, which is then punctuated by the dark reddish brown of the gunports let into the hull. As is typical of this style of model, the decoration is virtually two-dimensional with minor detail in the stern and quarter galleries. The name "Faulkland" appears on the stern, main deck and starboard broadside, with the number ‘56’ is marked on a plaque on starboard broadside. There is also a paper label on which is inscribed " "P.", "29a" and "Faulkland 50, 1750. catalogued (1928) under No.56. Not the American-built ship of 1690, but the "rebuilt" ship of 1702. Draught No 359 agrees with the model except for some differences in the distribution of ports on the upper deck and quarter deck, and clear signs that the model has been altered in these details". The whole model is mounted on a pair of crudely carved wooden crutches and is complete with an original pair of metal eyes on deck used in the past for a suspended display.
