Newark(1747); Warship; Third rate; 80 guns

Scale: 1:48. Contemporary block design model of the 'Newark' (1747), an 80 gun three-decker ship of the line. The number ‘13’ is on a label on the starboard broadside.

Decoration painted along the gunwale. The figurehead is painted onto the side and front of a solid block.

Although not as elaborate when compared with models such as those built in the Navy Board style, block models are considered a valuable source of information in terms of hull shape and decoration. They were constructed from layers of wood, the lines of which were lifted from the plan, and assembled in a ‘bread and butter’ fashion, after which the hull was carved and faired to produce a final smooth finish. It was the normal practise to paint on various fittings such as gun-port lids, channels and in some cases elaborate decoration.
