Fighting vessel; Galley; Maltese galley
Scale: About 1:30. A full hull model of a Maltese galley (about 1770), made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings and painted. The depicted vessel lateen rigged on all three masts, with the fore and main sails partly set and the mizzen sail fully set. The hull is long, shallow-drafted and sleek with an extremely acutely angled and pointed bow. The top section of deck can be removed to show the internal layout and construction. The hull is painted lead white below the waterline, with a narrow band of unpainted wood above than broadens at the bow and stern. Above the unpainted section are stripes of Saxe blue, brick red and Saxe blue, with decorative panes on the stern quarter bulwarks of gold filigree on a blue ground. The masts are varnished wood, with the lateen yards painted black. The sails are visually striking, made up of vertical alternating stripes of Saxe blue and gold silk. Fittings include fifty-three oars. The model is mounted on a pair of shaped wooden crutches and displayed on a rectangular wooden baseboard grained to imitate figured walnut.
