Service vessel; Ship's boat; Barge(?)

Scale: 1:24. A Georgian full hull model of a 10-oared ship’s boat from the ‘Arrogant’ (1761). The model is decked and equipped. A handwritten inscription dates the model to circa 1794.

Barges of this type were very unlike the cargo vessels used on canals and estuaries. They were used to transport the captains of warships ashore and to other ships when in harbour and sometimes at sea. They were larger than pinnaces, which transported the junior officers. Barges were long and narrow for easy rowing, though like all ships’ boats they could also carry sails. They were usually hoisted inboard and stowed in the centre of the ship when not in use.
