HMS Vanguard(1835); Warship; Battleship; 80 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the 80-gun battleship ‘Vanguard’ (1835). The hull is built in ‘bread and butter’ fashion and is complete with stump masts, channels and a detailed representation of the figurehead and stern galleries. The whole model is mounted on its original baseboard.

The first battleship designed by Sir William Symonds, Chief Surveyor of the Navy, the ‘Vanguard’ had the same beamy appearance that had characterized the 50-gun ‘Vernon’ (SLR0738), Symond’s first large vessel. Together with its six sister ships, it was built at Pembroke dock and measured 190 feet along the gun deck by beam of 57 feet and a tonnage of 2609 burden. In 1840, ‘Vanguard’ took part in operations off the Syrian coast under the command of Sir David Dunn. It was renamed ‘Ajax’ in 1867 before finally being broken up at Chatham in 1875.
