Service vessel(1851); Lifeboat; Pulling and sailing

Scale: 1:12? A contemporary full hull model of a pulling and sailing lifeboat (1851) mounted on its original crutches and baseboard. The hull is constructed of solid block of wood, with removable air cases at bow and stern. It is fitted with four scuppers for freeing water, which have been boxed and set under the thwarts for protection. At the bow and stern are sealed, raised air cases with a covering of cork to provide added buoyancy. Set into these end cases are indentations to allow access the bow and stern as well as to provide space for the helmsman to operate the tiller or yoke steering.

This model was proposed by Mr G. Turner, Master Shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard, and entered for the Duke of Northumberland’s Premium for the best design of lifeboat, a competition held in 1851.
