HMS Glatton (1871); Fighting vessel; Coast defence monitor
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of the port side of the coastal defence monitor HMS Glatton (1871), made entirely in wood and painted dark brown below the waterline, a narrow white stripe above and black above the waterline. There is significant paint loss and damage. Hull details include a ram bow, rudder and port side propeller shaft casing and mounting. Other fittings include superstructure placed amidships and a long shelter deck aft of it that extends to the stern; single large gun turret forward of the superstructure; entry port; boat deck atop the superstructure; stump mast; and single funnel, painted black. The model is displayed on a backboard painted off-white with a mahogany-stained frame, the right-hand edge of which is currently missing. On plaque ‘Glatton - Coast Defence Ship 1871. A Low Freeboard Turret Ship. Built at Chatham Sold in 1903. Armament: -2 12in. MLR. Dimensions Length 24ft Beam 54ft Displacement 4910 tons Speed 12 knots’. The plaque has become detached from the backboard.
