Celtic King (1891)

Scale: 1:48. A half block model of Celtic King (1891) made entirely in wood with metal fittings, some of which are gold plated. The hull, which is made in bread and butter fashion, is finished in natural varnished wood below the waterline and has black topsides to deck level with a wooden bulwark and wooden capping, below which are 25 circular portholes and 11 scuttle ports. The forecastle, poop, and bridge decks show individual planking lined in black ink whilst the main deck shows riveted plate construction. The forecastle is fitted with a ventilator cowling which is surrounded by guardrails supported by stanchions. Either side of the foremast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in with a single ventilator cowling forward. The main superstructure amidships consists of a bridge wing and chart house. The central accommodation superstructure is fitted with a pair of boats, mounted on chocks and rigged on davits, one of which is a double ended lifeboat, the other a transom sterned boat. There is a single raking funnel, cut down and painted black, with two ventilator cowlings and a pair of skylights. The bridge and boat deck are surrounded by guardrails supported by stanchions. Either side of the mizzen mast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in. The poop deck is fitted with a two tiered rounded skylight and a double steering wheel mounted on a rectangular steering box with raised grating and a binnacle forward of it. The whole model is mounted on a wooden backboard in a curved mahogany glass case (glass cracked and case removed for repair). There are two wooden plaques inscribed: 'Screw steamer Celtic King built by Workman Clark & CO Limited, Belfast' and 'Dimensions of vessel Length between perpendiculars 371ft 6in Breadth Moulded 44ft 0in Depth Moulded 30ft 0in'.
