‘Eagle’ was an ‘Audacious’-class carrier and was the second last-fleet carrier to serve with the Royal Navy. It was fitted with an angled flight deck, mirror-landing system for its aircraft, and two steam catapults. It could accommodate 45 aircraft and ten helicopters. In 1966–67 it was refitted with more powerful catapults and arrester gear to take Phantom aircraft. ‘Eagle’ was decommissioned in 1972 and was put on the sale list the following year.
