Service vessel; Lifeboat; Merchant ships' lifeboat
Scale: 1:4. A model of a clinker-built, 28-foot merchant ship’s lifeboat (1950). At such a large scale, one would be forgiven for assuming, at first glance, that this was an actual full-size boat. It was made for promotional purposes by the manufacturer of this design of lifeboat and its long list of fittings and equipment includes collapsible masts and davit hooks. The type was fitted with buoyancy tanks, had a small fully enclosed cabin in the centre and could be used under sail or power. It became very popular in the merchant navy. Watercraft Ltd., the company that made both model and its depicted subject, built all sorts of small vessels from police launches to narrow boats, but was particularly well-known for its lifeboats.
