'John E Hyde' (1951); Merchant vessel; Cargo vessel; Tanker
Scale: 1:130. This Swedish model has been made to an unusual scale by a commercial modelmaking company. 'John E Hyde' (1951) was an average-size oil tanker of the period. She was built in the conventional method of the period using longitudinal framing, by A/B Götaverken, Gothenburg, Sweden. The Museum also has a model of the same vessel (SLR0084) that depicts the ship following her later conversion to a bulk carrier. The Japanese shipyard, Kure Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, lengthened and widened the ‘John E Hyde's’ hull and strengthened the holds to take bulk cargoes.
Looking at the two models side by side, they appear to represent completely dissimilar ships, especially as they have been made to different scales.
