Bamenda Palm(1956); Merchant vessel; Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:96. Something of an anachronism in modelmaking terms the ‘Bamenda Palm’ (1956) is, despite its relatively recent age, very much a shipbuilder’s model of the old style with its turned pillar supports and heavy mahogany baseboard. It is one of the last models to show the 'builder's style' in model construction in the Museum’s collection.
The distinctive colours of the Palm Line, for whom the vessel was built, and who presented the model to the NMM, can be seen on the funnel. Details include accommodation ladders rigged on both port and starboard sides of the model, which in reality would be unusual. ‘Bamenda Palm’ herself was built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson. She had a number of owners and name changes during the course of her life and was sold for scrap in 1983.
