Service vessel: Barge; Captain's barge
Scale: 1:72. A model of one of HMS ‘Ramilles’s’ boats (circa 1946), made by a member of the ship’s company. Its maker has followed an age-old tradition of making ship models at sea to while away the long, and sometimes tedious, hours. The things that most modelmakers take for granted – a constant supply of good quality materials, fine tools, specialist equipment, good natural and artificial light, comprehensive plans, a steady work surface, dedicated workspace, supporting reference material – may well be lacking at sea, but the likes of Alan Leonard Brown have the great advantage that the depicted subject is readily available as a source of reference. While this particular example may not represent the epitome of the modelmakers’ art, it does demonstrate a close acquaintance between modeller and subject in its attention to the details that others might miss.
