Scale 1: 12. A model depicting a longitudinal section of the side lever engines on HMS Lightning (1823). The flat part of the drawing is cut out of the crankshaft to reveal the paddle in its paddle box. The hub, arms and paddle floats are constructed in wood and painted black, mounted on a grey background. The parts are individually annotated. There is a written key in the top left hand corner, which refers to the annotated parts. At the bottom of the drawing is a scale marked in feet and inches. Model inscribed 'Longitudinal section of the engines of the Lightning steam vessel' . In the bottom right hand corner it is signed 'R Taplin 1834'. Plaque inscribed ' "Motion drawing" side lever engines HMS Lightning 1823'. The model is mounted in a glazed and painted wooden case.
