HMS 'Defiance' (1783); Warship; Third rate 74-gun

Scale: Unknown. A model of a proposed double capstan for the third rate 74-gun warship HMS 'Defiance' (1783). The model is made in wood, stained and polished a golden brown colour. Two decks are depicted, the lower one serving as a baseboard for the model. The upper deck section is supported by four decoratively-turned slender columns and the centre section is unplanked through which the capstan pivoting bar passes, and its method of working is rigged. The columns are arranged in two pairs, each supporting a deck beam section. The capstan's pivoting bar runs vertically and turns on a peg hole in the lower deck. A circular bed for the lower capstan circumscribes the peg hole, though the lower capstan itself appears to be missing. There is a circular apparatus, connected with the lower capstan, just below the upper deck section with broad crenelations around its circumference and three domed caps or bosses on its upper face. The boss of the upper capstan is missing, exposing the termination of the pivot bar into which has been inscribed a thread, similar to a bolt or screw.
