Scale: Unknown. An instructional model of a main topmast showing the additional support required for strengthening a scarf joint. The model is made entirely of a dark stained mahogany wood together with cord lashings above and below the mast cap. At the base, the mast is square in section with an octagonal heel and is fitted with a horizontal hole to take the fid. Where the first set of cord lashing starts, the mast tapers and is octagonal in section with the additional vertical cheek timbers running up through the cap where it gradually tapers to a rounded section. The cap itself is complete with three pairs of iron ringbolts and a square hole to take the heel of the topgallant mast. There is a paper covered metal label which reads "PLAN for scarfing a Main topmast".
