Portuguese Barco Rabelo
Scale: circa 1:25. Full hull model of a Portuguese barco rabelo or wine barge constructed plank on frame in a clinker fashion. It is rigged with a single mast and a large square loose footed sail. Immediately aft of the mast is a raised wooden steering platform and shelter for the steersman and crew while at the stern is a canvas covered area for crew accommodation. The hull is almost double ended with a flat bottom and no keel, with the bow much shallower and flatter than the raised and pointed stern. From the deck up are fitted removable washstrakes together with a series of six wooden floorboards and two small decks at the bow and the stern. The bulk of the hull is finished in a natural varnished wood with white, red, light blue and dark brown colours applied to the bow and stern area, the wooden area giving access to the steering platform and the various items of equipment within the shelter. Within the wooden shelter is an array of equipment including a bailer, a bucket, metal pots and kettles, a raised wooden box, cloth bags and a large wooden shovel. In the shelter at the stern looks to be two rolls of bedding. At the top of the stern post is a large semi circular rectangular block of wood fitted with a wooden thole pin on which is mounted a large balanced steering oar, which is mostly painted a bright red colour. There are also four wooden oars constructed of a tapering circular piece of wood for the shaft to which flat tapering blades have been attached, a pair of boat hooks and quants consisting of circular tapering wooden shafts with metal pointed caps.
