Component model; Sectional model
Scale: 1:6. A sectional model showing the scuttle hole for iron-plated wooden built warships (circa 1862). The model is made almost entirely of wood, with the inboard side painted a creamy white and the top end, rear faces and ends are finished in either natural mahogany or varnish and stained. The inboard face shows a stepped arrangement on which is mounted the scuttle hole, which is elliptical in shape and tapers towards the outboard side. Within the scuttle hole itself are two vertical holes which are probably part of the mechanism used to make a scuttle hole watertight.
There is also a steel and swivelling and angled bracket, which is forked at the top, again probably part of the securing mechanism. By raising this bracket from its bottom end it can be pivoted from side-to-side.
