HMS Glatton (1871); Warship; Coast defence armoured turret ship
Scale: Unknown. Demonstration model depicting a section of the midship gun deck of the coast defence armoured turret ship HMS Glatton (1871). The section includes the gun port and acts as a base for displaying the gun and its slide carriage. Both the gun and the section are made of wood which is painted black. There is a working mechanism for raising and lowering the elevation of the gun. The elevation mechanism is made of brass. The muzzle loading gun has been rifled. The slide carriage has wooden trucks at the front and rear and is made from black painted wood and metal. A pulley system beneath the carriage allows the carriage to slide back and forth. The carriage is asymmetrical in shape which allows it, when recoiled, to fit the contour of the hull behind it. There is a plaque attached to the side of the model, inscribed "H. M. S. Thunderer. Museum Item No. A8".
