Breach loading cannon
Scale: circa 1:12. Model of a proposed breech-loading (vertical breech stopper) cannon (circa 1850), with carriage. The cannon barrel has been cast from iron and painted black overall and is mounted by its trunions on a wooden four-wheeled carriage which is held together by five pairs of large bolts with nuts at either end. The carriage is stained and varnished and inscribed with "25/17"1 and stamped with "MA 6357", and " ON LOAN MARITIME MUSEUM 14.9.71" typed on a paper label on the underside. On the left-hand side of the carriage is a large vertical lever which operates the vertical breech stopper loading mechanism, the movement of which is counter-balanced by a large cube of lead between the carriage frame beneath the gun.
