Passenger vessel; Canoe; Polynesian Outrigger
Scale: Unknown. A model of a Polynesian outrigger canoe made entirely from wood. The hull is double ended, narrow and deep and is carved from two pieces of wood divided longitudinally along the waterline and stitched together. The upper half of the canoe is carved with a simple geometric diamond pattern. In the centre of the hull is a lozenge shaped aperture for the crew and a single thwart. Two outrigger poles are attached to the hull by straw or raffia and hold the outrigger which is made from a single cylindrical length of wood with a pointed end. The outrigger is rigged to the port side of the boat.
