gauge, mullet
Mullet gauge. A length of wood pointed at each end with a moulded groove running up the centre. A short length of wood used to test the thickness of panels. A groove is cut in one edge with the same tool used to work the grooves in the stiles and rails. Its purpose is to test whether the edges of the panels have been brought down to the required thickness.
