Fishing vessel; Sampan
Scale: 1:12. A contemporary full hull model of a sampan (circa 1900) of a type built at Aberdeen, a fishing village on the south side of Hong Kong Island, China. It is made entirely in wood and varnished. The hull has a bluff bow and transom stern and the model illustrates the frames and hull construction. Fittings include a seat at the bow, one thole pin located near the starboard bow, a central fish well amidships divided into four covered compartments, a further storage area at the stern behind the bulkhead, with a cover and a thole pin on the port quarter for using a steering oar over the stern. The model is mounted on a pair of wooden crutches connected by a stretcher.
Boats of this type were used for inshore line fishing and transferring the catch from fishing junks to the shore. They were propelled with a steering oar against a thole pin over the stern. The wells were filled with fresh seawater via holes in the hull planking to keep the fish alive ready to be sold at market.
There are two photographs of this model in the Waters' Collection P34579, P34580.
