Cap, Leyland Line
Blue wool peaked cap of Leyland Line. Blue wool cap band with foliate scroll pattern and scalloped edge with two gold lace stripes to indicate rank. A blue wool cap badge of Leyland Line is worn on the cap band. The badge contains a red rectangular flag of applied ribbed silk fabric outlined with coiled gold metal. The flag is surrounded by laurel leaves of gold purl with stems of applied coiled gold metal.
The cap’s visor is made of card faced with black leather (green on the under side) with black leather binding on the edge of the visor. The black leather strap across the visor is fixed with a button to either side of the cap.
On the interior of the cap there is a brown leather hat band and black silk lining with the maker’s details stamped in silver ‘HUGHES & STERLING / HATTERS & HOSIERS / 85 & 87 HARLEY ROAD / BOOTLE’ [Possible inscription, very worn].
Cap is from the uniform of Captain Joseph Stafford Dare (1863-1951).
