Dry card compass
An Arctic sledge compass with two spare cards, maker unknown, but probably Henry Barrow, about 1839. The bowl is of peculiar construction and the leather cover was intended to protect the hands of the user from contact with the metal.
Bowl: Brass has hinged top with hole for reading course. Brass verge ring with glass. Black line across glass. Has lanyard ring bound in leather. Card lifter on outside.
Card: Black with white markings graduated to 1/4 points and in degrees 0 - 136 anticlockwise. Crown on card. Diameter 1.8" (4.7 cm)
Needle: Unsighted
Pivot: Unsighted. Jewelled brass pivot cap at centre of card.
Encased in leather.
