Liquid compass - aircraft compass

Liquid compass. A block of wood with a light attachment is marked ACO0386.1 and can be viewed via the Whole/Part toggle.
Bowl: Grey, painted brass, filler plug at side, expansion chamber fitted to glazed bottom of bowl. Fitted with an azimuth circle of the large prism type with a tripod at centre to carry a shadow pin. Inside of bowl painted white with a black wire lubber line projecting from the foreside. Mounted in a grey painted brass gimbal ring which is attached to the aluminium binnacle.
Binnacle: Diameter 14.0" (35.6cm) Height 12.0" (30.5cm) Grey painted aluminium. Has a door leading to a recess accommodating a rack (separate) for carrying corrector magnets and lamp for lighting compass card. A metal diaphragm separates this recess from bowl recess and is fitted with a dimming shutter. Fitted with chain boxes for quadrantal error correction. These are mounted fore and aft. A hood is provided to protect compass.
Card: Diameter 6.5" (16.5cm) Narrow mica ring, white with black markings, graduated to 360 degrees. Attached by four wires to small float at centre which accommodates the pivot. Card is fitted with eight damping filaments.
Needle: Two magnets of circular section are mounted below card.
Pivot: Inverted type unsighted. Stem is attached to white painted disc which is secured to bridge at bottom of bowl.
