Presentation Sword
Presentation sword, which belonged to Captain James Analby Legard (died 1869). The hilt of the sword consists of an ornate gilt square guard. The knuckle-guard is shaped like a club with a serpent twisted around it, the serpent's head passing through a ring in the mouth of the lion's head which forms the pommel. The quillons consist of bundles of fasces with a victor's axe. The langets are decorated with an embossed head. The sword has a lion's head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending the length of the back-piece and ending in two paws, which overlap the white ivory, diamond knurled grip. The sword knot consists of plain gold cord with a tassel and twelve gold bullions.
The sword has a flat-backed, very curved steel blade. The reverse of the blade is engraved with the words 'Presented To Lieut. James A. Legard of HM Bomb Vessel Infernal by the Petty Officers and Ship's Company as a Small Mark of their Respect and Regard June 10th 1830'. The blade is also decorated with naval emblems and Royal arms and bears the maker's name. The scabbard comprises a wooden sheath, covered with light blue plush. The reverse of the scabbard bears the inscription 'Salter, Sword-Cutler to the Duke of Sussex, Corner of the Adelphi, 73 Strand, London'. The scabbard has two gilt lockets with rings and a gilt chape, all highly decorated. The top locket is embossed with an oval containing a depiction of the slaying of Medusa. The mid locket is embossed with an oval containing a depiction of Mars. The chape is embossed with an oval containing a depiction of Perseus.
Captain James Analby Legard (died 1869) was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1827 due to the part he played in the Battle of Navarino. He served aboard HMS 'Infernal' from March 1829 until September 1830 and as nothing distinguishing happened to this ship during this period, Legard's sympathetic term of office might have prompted this award. In 1844, having rendered some service to the Portuguese Government, he was awarded the Knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword. James Analby Legard was promoted to the rank of Captain on the retired list in 1856 and died in 1869. The sword belt belonging to this sword is held in the National Maritime Museum's uniform collection.
