Presentation Sword. Owned by Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood (1762-1814). Hilt consists of gilt metal. The grip is cast and chased in the form of a crocodile and bears on both sides engraved plaques. The knuckle-bow form of guard broadens to incorporate an oval shield on which is engraved the crest of Samuel Hood. The leaf-shaped stool has a beaded edge. Blade is slightly curved. There is a black leather scabbard with two gilt lockets and chape. Inscribed on the obverse of the grip is 'VICTORY of the NILE 1st Augt 1798' and on the reverse 'CAPTN SAML HOOD / His Majesty's Ship / ZEALOUS'.

After the Battle of the Nile on 1 August 1798, the British captains established the Egyptian Club in commemoration of the action. They also presented their commander, Horatio Nelson with a sword as a token of their admiration. It appears that several members of this club subsequently had swords made for themselves in imitation of the one given to Nelson. It is likely that this sword is one of these.
