Presentation Small-Sword

Presentation Small-Sword. Owned by Captain W. Daniel (active 1758-1797). Small-sword silver gilt hilt with enamel insets on pommel grip, guard and shell with inscription on other side of shell. Blade is partially blued and gilded. There is a black? fish-skin scabbard with two lockets and chape. The top locket is signed R. Makepiece, London. This sword is complete with a red morocco hilt case. Inscribed on the shell is 'PRESENTED by the Committee of Merchants & Co of London to CAPTAIN WILLM DANIEL of the ROYAL NAVY for his great & unremitting exertions in the performance of his duty AT AND BELOW GRAVESEND during the MUTINY at the NORE in 1797. Marine Society Office/ May 10 1798 - Hugh Inglis Esq/ Chairman'. The silver is hallmarked 1798. Received with sword WPN1554 to his son Lieutenant W.H. Daniel. Captain William Daniel was promoted Lieutenant in 1758; Commander 1779; Captain 1781. His son Captain William Henry Daniel was promoted Lieutenant in 1781; Commander 1798; Captain 1802.
