A distant view of the hospital ship Jan Breydel (1909) entering Dover.
A distant port broadside view of the hospital ship Jan Breydel (1909) under way, entering Dover. Other ships can be seen in the distance, including the stern of a seaplane carrier. The Jan Breydel was a cross channel ferry between Ostend and Dover prior to being used as an hospital ship between August 1915 and August 1919.
The photograph was taken from the deck of the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913). Aurora was based at Dover twice in July: 10-15 July, before returning to Harwich on 16 July 1916. She then returned to Dover on 21 July steaming back to Harwich on 29 July. [TNA, ADM 53/34495, ship's log].
