A fair quality slightly distant port side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the passenger/cargo liner Pembroke Castle (1883) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, flying the blue peter on Saturday, 21 February 1885. She is serving as Transport No. 11 for the Soudan Campaign and is embarking 838 officers and men of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards from the ferries Duke of Edinburgh (1870), Vesta (1867) and Osprey (1878). The Vesta (1867) is outboard of the Duke of Edinburgh (1870) and the Osprey (1878) is not in the picture. The Pembroke Castle (1883) set sail for Suakin at 13.25. Negatives numbers G1745, G2222 and G2226 were taken on the same occasion and G2226 is the best of the three.
