The Art of Pen Painting
Talk given by Dr. Lelia Packer, Curator of Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and Pre-1600 Paintings at the Wallace Collection
Pen painting is a little-known but highly virtuosic technique, unique to the Dutch seventeenth century. It involves drawing with pen and ink on a prepared support traditionally used for painting, such as panel or canvas, in a manner imitating printed engravings.
Pen paintings therefore at once call to mind drawings, paintings and prints. In this talk Dr. Packer will trace the early origins and development of this fascinating technique, which culminated in the Dutch marine genre in the middle of the seventeenth century.

About the speaker
Dr. Lelia Packer is Curator of Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and Pre-1600 Paintings at the Wallace Collection where she most recently curated the exhibition, ‘Frans Hals: The Male Portrait.’
She is currently completing a book on the Wallace Collection’s substantial group of vedute by Canaletto, Francesco Guardi and artists associated with their studios.
