This talk is entitled ‘Home from Home?’ and will be based on the painting Eleven o’clock in the forecastle by Henry Taylor Lamb (1940). Using this evocative painting as a starting point, this talk will discuss the often-overlooked domestic lives of men on board Royal Navy battleships.
What were the arrangements for them to eat, sleep and socialise and how did this impact their own sense of identity? Using a range of sources and personal accounts, this talk seeks to bring to life the ways in which seamen made the mighty machines of war they dwelt in a home from home.
