From privileged officers to working-class sailors, the representation of naval personnel has been a significant branch of British art for over 500 years. Royal Museums Greenwich holds the largest collection of naval portraits in the world, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture.
The Art of Naval Portraiture is a new book exploring the richness and variety of this collection. It charts the historical evolution of the Royal Navy’s image, explaining the meaning of naval symbolism, delving into the stories of specific artists and considering the places where portraits were made and displayed.
Join Dr Katherine Gazzard, Curator of Art (Post-1800) at Royal Museums Greenwich, as she shares highlights from the book and introduces the complex, fascinating and often surprising history of naval portraiture.
