‘Try me good king, let me have a lawful trial’ - Anne Boleyn, Tower of London, May 6 1536.
With Libby Larsen’s thrilling song cycle Try Me Good King as a centre piece, this Tudor fantasy weaves together a tale in art song and vocal ensemble, where the wives of Henry VIII meet up with him in Purgatory for a furious and final reckoning; Henry has nowhere to hide as they confront him about the humiliations and horrors of their marital lives. Other royal guests from the past and future join the fray. Doomed queens, executed suitors, jilted lovers and even the Bard himself rub shoulders in this mission for revenge.
From beyond the grave, Anne Boleyn plays her trump card.
