(2) Certificate confirming Alexander's qualification following examination in naval gunnery, dated 26 March 1849. Signed by Captain Henry D. Chads of the gunnery training ship HMS EXCELLENT ex BOYNE (1810) at Portsmouth.
(3) Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty certificate appointing Alexander as mate of HMS ROYAL WILLIAM (1833), dated 7 April 1849.
(4) Letter to certify that Alexander served as mate on HMS SUPERB (1842) between 2 July 1849 and 26 December 1850. Signed by Captain Edward Purcell at Malta.
(5) Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty certificate appointing Alexander as commander of the sloop HMS HOPE, dated 28 May 1858.
(6) Certificate confirming Alexander's entitlement to a Second Class Certificate for practical knowledge in the working of a steam engine. Signed by Captain Superintendent Astley C. Key and Professor Thomas J. Main of the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth, dated 12 December 1863.
