Orders and receipts for money carried on HMS AUDACIOUS, 1808.

Orders and receipts received by Gosselin in command of HMS AUDACIOUS (1785), relating to Spanish dollars carried as freight during Peninsular War operations. They record deliveries made to the orders of W.P. Smith, Deputy Paymaster General, and Robert H. Kennedy, Deputy Commissary General, with the army under Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Burrard:

(1) Letter from the Admiralty with directions to receive on board at Spithead the sum of 500,000 dollars, dated 21 July 1808.
(2) Letter requesting 76,000 dollars to be delivered to the army, signed by Kennedy at Portsmouth, dated 24 July 1808.
(3) Letter enclosing the above request and giving other instructions, signed by Smith on board the WILLIAMS, No 243, at St Helens, dated 28 July 1808.
(4) Letter requesting the issue of 6 casks, completing Kennedy’s order for 76,000 dollars dated 24 July, signed by Smith on board the SOPHIA, No 348, dated 27 August 1808.
(5) Receipt for 13 casks, the whole amounting to 75,042½ dollars, signed by Smith on board the SOPHIA, No 348, Smith, dated 27 August 1808.
(6) Letter requesting 4 casks to be sent on shore to Deputy Commissary General Philip Rawlings, signed by Kennedy at Torros Vedras, dated 31 August 1808.
(7) Receipt for 5 casks, signed by Rawlings, dated 7 September 1808.
(8) Letter requesting the issue of 19 casks for the immediate service of the army, signed by Smith at Headquarters, Oyeras, dated 8 September 1808.
(9) Letter requesting the issue of 266,666 dollars on account of the ordinary services of the army, signed by Kennedy at Oyeras, dated 8 September 1808.
(10) Letter requesting the issue of 16 casks in further part of Kennedy’s last order, signed by Smith at Oyeras, dated 10 September 1808.
(11) and (12) Letters with two requests for 11 casks to be issued to Thomson C. Holliday of the Commissary Department, both signed by Kennedy and dated 16 September 1808.
(13) and (14) Receipts for two issues of 11 kegs, each a total of 55,000 ounces of dollars, supplied in the Tagus, signed by Holliday, dated 16 and 17 September 1808.
(15) Letter requesting 11 casks of dollars and 1,256¾ dollars to be delivered to the bearer, the balance due on 266, 666¾ dollars agreeable to Kennedy’s letter of 8 September, signed by Smith at Lisbon, dated 26 September 1808.
(16) Receipt for 266, 666¾ dollars in casks, each containing 5,000 ounces, signed by Smith at Lisbon, dated 26 September 1808.
(17) Receipt for 12 kegs containing 58,000 ounces of dollars supplied in the Tagus, dated 27 September 1808.
(18) Receipt for 2,215¼ dollars signed by John Martin for the Deputy Paymaster General, dated 27 September 1808.
(19) Sheet with a record of sums of money issued beween 30 July and 27 September 1808.
