Bundles of loose correspondence and a watch bill selected from a collection of naval manuscripts offered by the dealer Edward Hall of Gravesend:

Notebook containing a watch, quarter, station, and fire bill for HMS QUEEN (1839), kept by George Worth as a naval cadet, 1861-1862.

Letters received by Sir John Phillipart (c.1784-1874) while he was editor of 'The Naval and Military Gazette', 1841-1860. Including letters from Rear-Admiral John Toup Nicholas (1788-1851), Admiral Sir James Scott (1790-1872), Admiral William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) and Admiral Sir Bartholomew Sulivan (1810-1890).

Twelve letters received by the Reverend Thomas Brooke Clarke, auditor of the Royal Naval Asylum at Greenwich, 1805-1819.

Letters written and received by Admiral Sir Algernon Frederick Rous de Horsey (1827-1922) in the period 1840-1912.

Administrative / biographical background
See the CLA collection for a catalogued collection of papers of the Reverend Thomas B. Clarke (c.1757-1833) purchased from Edward Hall in 1959. A service record for Lieutenant George Worth born in London in 1845 can be found at The National Archives under the reference ADM 196/17/21. He was a lieutenant on the troopship HMS JUMNA at the time of the census in 1881 and had retired by the time of the following census in 1891.
