A display of fruit outside a wooden building.

A portrait photograph of a selection of fruits arranged along the side of a wooden building. The fruits include pineapples, bananas, mangoes and coconuts; some are hanging from the side of the building, some are on a table and some are on the ground.

The photograph is captioned 'Fruits. Tahiti'

The purpose of this photograph, taken during HMS Alert's voyage to the South Pacific between 1879-1882, may have been to illustrate the different types of fruit that grow in Tahiti. Dr Coppinger records arriving at Tahiti on 6 August 1880. He does not mention the departure date but HMS Alert arrived at the island of Nassau on 27 August 1880, about 1,115 miles [1,847 km] north west of Tahiti. Coppinger also mentions the produce from Tahiti, including coconuts, oranges, bananas and mangoes [page 149]
