A man, woman and child outside a woven and thatched fale o'o (hut).

A landscape photograph of a Tongan man and woman standing in front of a hut, possibly called a 'fale o'o', made of interwoven palm fronds and thatched with palm leaves. A further three people are sitting on the floor inside the hut. The three people may have been chosen by the photographer to illustrate the size of the building or perhaps as an exercise in ethnographic photography.

The photograph is captioned 'Natives and hut. Tongatabu. Friendly Islands.'

Dr R. W. Coppinger records being at Tongatapu, Friendly Islands, between 8 and 18 November 1880.
